Born in Melbourne, Roby had the privilege to live in Northern Italy for several years during his early teens. On his return to Australia, he began his passion for drums and percussion.
While at high school, Roby was invited to join the Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra. This experience was important in giving him a broader appreciation, understanding, and proficiency as a musician. Throughout his high school years, Roby developed the goal and dream of attending the Victoria College of the Arts in Melbourne, where he could study music and the drum set. Following this, Roby joined the VCA under the guidance of the great Brian Brown, Graham Lyall, and Geoff Kluke, to name a few.
After graduating, Roby began to take part in Melbourne’s live music scene, performing and recording with many different groups across a wide range of musical styles: reggae, ska, blues, soul, jazz, and electronic. His versatility as a musician was noticed and he soon joined alternative-rock band ‘Dry’, signing a record deal with Mushroom Records.
While endorsed by Yamaha Drums (Japan), Roby travelled to Osaka to visit the Sakae Rhythm Factory. This is where he was able to build his own custom snare drum (4x14 - 8 lug - in 5 ply Birch). In 2023, he also visited the Koide Cymbals factory in Osaka.
Roby continues to inspire and teach up-and-coming drummers today! He continues to perform, record, and produce with fellow musicians.
